Puchang Vineyard has already established itself as one of the more compelling producers to have emerged from the Turpan Basin of Xinjiang, with their Rkatsiteli being their best white to date. The 2020 Rkatsiteli has a moderate lemon appearance. On the nose, there is plenty of this Caucasian variety’s trademark quince, red pear and nectarine fruit with a touch of white flower and some nutty, slightly honeyed development. On the palate, the 2020 Rkatsiteli is full-bodied with some lively acidity and a rich palate of relatively well-integrated 14.5% alcohol supporting the core of ripe, dense Rkatsiteli fruit (think quince, think membrillo). There is also a subtle palate texture from some lees influence, adding a sensation of creaminess offsetting the lively acid. With its longer length, this is Puchang’s best Rkatsiteli to date (even slightly better than the compelling 2017 vintage). It will be interesting to see how it develops in bottle as it certainly has at least another 5 years of aging potential.
