Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, also known as the "Little Angel" estate, is considered the epitome of finesse and resilience in the village of Vosne-Romanée. The estate was established in 1928 when André Mugneret married Jeanne Gibourg, forming the "Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg." At that time, most of the vineyards were leased from other winegrowers. In 1933, their two sons founded their own estate, "Domaine Georges Mugneret," which differed from their parents' approach. Georges primarily cultivated his own grapes and produced and labeled the wines for sale.
In 1988, Georges passed away prematurely, leaving behind both estates. His wife Jacqueline took over, and their eldest daughter, Marie-Christine, gave up her career as a pharmacist to join the family business and assist her mother in managing the estates. In 1992, Marie-Andrée obtained her winemaking degree and subsequently joined her mother and sister's team. In 2009, the two sisters merged the two estates and renamed it "Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg." The estate encompasses 9 hectares, including three grand cru vineyards (Echezeaux, Clos Vougeot, and Ruchottes-Chambertin) and a premier cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny. However, the highest production comes from the village-level Vosne-Romanée wines.
Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg follows organic practices, abstaining from the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Marie-Andrée continuously attends to the needs of the plants to ensure the production of higher-quality grapes. She makes adjustments such as increasing vine height for better sunlight exposure or conducting pruning when necessary. From cultivation to winemaking, the estate has made subtle changes to the approach established by their father. The women have added delicate touches that allow the wines to exhibit a more supple and tense character. For instance, since Marie-Christine took charge of the cellar, she began selecting different oak barrels based on the characteristics of each vineyard, reducing the proportion of new barrels compared to her father's era. This approach allows the wines to express the pure elegance woven by the terroir and Pinot Noir.
Furthermore, unlike the aging period of 20-30 years practiced by their father, the two sisters almost exclusively perform whole-cluster fermentation to preserve the aromatic fruit flavors. Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg advocates for expressing their respect for the terroir and grapevines through collaborative work, much like a group of angels guarding the vineyards and cellars. With each bottle of their fine wines, they convey blessings from the Burgundy land.
