Longting’s 2021 Marselan has a medium to deep purple appearance. On the nose, there is some perfumed, lifted black and red plum, blueberry and black cherry fruit with a violet note (this was cold soaked) and a touch of savoriness but no new oak influence. On the palate, it is a more refreshing expression of the variety than is typical—influenced by both vintage conditions and also the proximity of the vineyard to the sea in this slightly cooler part of Shandong. Expect lively acidity, some fine-grained, chewy tannins and fairly well-integrated 13.5% alcohol supporting a pleasant core of precise Marselan fruit with those sweet and savory notes. With its moderate length, this is a more achieved wine than the first 2020 vintage. It is drinking well now but will also improve in bottle over the next 2-3 years or so.
