Benjamin Rothschild & Vega Sicilia

The estate was founded in 2003 when Benjamin de Rothschild, a prominent Bordeaux family with ambitious plans to expand their wine business globally, sought the best regions in Spain. After sharing his vision with Pablo Alvarez, the owner of Vega Sicilia, Pablo decided to enter into a joint venture with Benjamin, leading to the establishment of the unprecedented BR&VS estate, combining the expertise of the two renowned families from Bordeaux and Spain.Located in the Rioja region of Spain, after years of secret exploration, the estate identified San Vicente de la Sonsierra as the prime vineyard site. Winemaker Javier Ausás passionately pursued the unique expression of the terroir. In contrast to the traditional blending of grapes from various sub-regions, the winemaking philosophy of the Macan series focuses on reflecting the distinct terroir of a single plot. The wines do not adhere to the aging classification system of Crianza to Gran Reserva, and American oak barrels are excluded. Instead, both wines are matured for one year in a blend of 50% new and 50% used Burgundian oak barrels.With the support of the two families, the Macan series showcases an innovative approach that sets it apart, demonstrating a remarkable fusion of tradition and innovation.
