In recent years, small independent farmers have gained significant attention, and in the Champagne region, they are referred to as "Récoltant Manipulant" (RM Champagne), which means "grower-producer Champagne." These Champagnes are produced entirely by the estate, from grape cultivation to bottling. They offer a wide range of unique and ever-changing styles, with limited production quantities.
Chartogne Taillet is one such notable producer. The family lineage and vineyard cultivation can be traced back to 1490. Currently, the estate is led by Alexandre Chartogne, who has trained under the renowned Champagne figure Jacques Selosse and Anselme Selosse. Chartogne Taillet has embraced a highly organic and natural approach, making them a prominent figure among the new generation of independent grower-producers.
Small independent producers employ entirely natural processes in the Champagne-making journey. They strictly protect the vineyard soil, avoid the use of machinery, and even employ horses to prevent soil compaction, allowing the vines to delve deeper and absorb a wider range of nutrients, resulting in a more diverse expression of terroir. They also refrain from filtration to preserve maximum flavor and create youthful yet powerful Champagnes. These Champagnes often exhibit a characteristic subtle saline and iodine note, making them an excellent pairing for steamed seasonal seafood dishes.
