DFC’s 2014 East Garden is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Marselan and 2.5% Petit Verdot. The 2014 has a moderate to deep ruby appearance (less orange to the rim than the younger 2015 vintage, 2014 having been especially strong in Huailai). On the nose, the 2014 is also more youthful than the 2015, with a core of mellowing but still bright, lifted leafy black and red fruit (showing mulberry, cassis, bramble and red plum but also a touch of violet and blueberry from the Marselan) combined with some savory new oak notes of clove, toast, smoke and a touch of vanilla (the 2014 vintage saw 18 months in new French barriques of which 46% were new). There is only slight tertiary development showing here with a hint of leather. On the palate, the 2014 East Garden is full-bodied with some lovely ripe, fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and well-integrated 14% alcohol, supporting a core of well-defined predominantly black fruit that is nicely harmonized here with the savory new oak and touch of development. With its long length, the 2014 East Garden is clearly a stronger vintage than the 2015 and will also age for longer in bottle.
