The section of the vineyard that grows the fruit for this wine is on very shallow clay with a deep limestone base. The 2018 Retrospect Pinot Noir leads with vitality and freshness, dried herbs, bone broth, brine and black cherry. The wine is complex and restrained, with a spool of intertwining flavors through the long finish. It’s an elegant and eminently balanced wine, with gently wrapping, ductile tannins. A powerful and black-fruited wine, but due to the elegance of the limestone subsoil, it has that too. Bigger in framing than the Antipodes, but in the context of Otago Pinot, it’s elegant. 2018 was an even, warm season until harvest, when it snowed in February and “knocked the heat out of this amazing, early vintage. 2009 was not dissimilar,” says Winemaker Paul Pujol. Of 1,668 bottles produced, this is bottle number 1,027. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam.
