Zusslin's 2019 Bollenberg Pinot Gris Mœlleux comes from an exciting Mediterranean, in terms of biodiversity, terroir with calcareous clay soils rich in iron, which is a top prerequisite to produce great Pinots, not just Pinot Noir. This biodynamically cultivated mœlleux opens with a clear and really rare, for Pinot Gris, subtle bouquet with delicate limestone and lime juice aromas intertwined with a hint of iodine. On the palate, this is a sweet yet savory, filigreed and structured Pinot that is still very young and by far not as baroque or as one-dimensional as so many Alsace Pinot Gris can be. This one here is dense, serious and long and probably has a great future ahead. One can already serve it today, even with fish, but this Bollenberg will gain complexity over decades. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in March 2023.
