Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92
The 2020 Assyrtiko Barrel Fermented is an Assyrtiko aged for six months in mostly (90%) used French oak. It comes in at 15.2% alcohol, 2.1 grams of residual sugar and 6.2 of total acidity—another fat and ripe (and somewhat alcoholic) wine in this vintage. This, with the overlay of oak, seems much bigger than the big regular Santorini this issue and more expressive. Here, the richness seems matched by the wine's depth and overall demeanor. This rolls around the mouth and coats the palate nicely. It handles the oak brilliantly, but it is still a wine that you will really want to drink with food. Otherwise, it will seem ponderous. It is also a wine that will need a year or two in the cellar to show you everything it has. It looks promising, but the promises are as yet unfulfilled and there were moments where I wondered if it would stay in balance. Still, it righted itself and drank better the next day, so that's a key data point in its favor. Let's start here. It will be interesting to see how this evolves. It has a higher upside than the regular Santorini but perhaps a little more risk as well.
