Yuandian is a small Ningxia producer working from only 15 hectares of vineyards dedicated to Riesling, Viognier, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Yuandian’s 2019 The Starting Point Riesling has a moderate lemon-green appearance. On the nose, there is plenty of Riesling character in a predictably warmer-climate expression showing lime, peach, nectarine and some white flower. On the palate, the 2019 Riesling is dry and light-bodied with some zippy acidity, relatively well-integrated 12% alcohol and a core of ripe Riesling fruit showing lime zest, stone fruit and that hint of white flower. With its moderate length, this is among China’s better examples of true Riesling (a lot of Italian Riesling is planted) that is approachable now but will also improve over the next two to three years. Only 2,376 bottles produced.
