Shao Ling Winery was founded by Shanjianggu Vineyard Co., Ltd. The name "Shao Ling" signifies "the towering peaks above the clouds," symbolizing the magnificent landscapes of the motherland and the proud souls of its people. Shao Ling Winery seamlessly integrates the winemaking philosophy of Burgundy, France, with the Tibetan culture of the Shangri-La snow-capped plateau, creating a series of extraordinary wines with a Chinese essence.
Situated in the Deqin wine region of Yunnan Province, along the upper reaches of the Mekong River, near the nearly 7,000-meter-high Kawagebo Snow Mountain, the winery's history dates back to 1846 when French missionaries arrived at the foot of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. They established missions in the regions of Cigu, Cizhong, and Badong along the upper reaches of the Lancang River and planted the first vineyards in the Tibetan area to produce wine. Due to conflicts, the last group of missionaries were forced to leave China, leaving the vineyards under the care of the local Tibetans.
In the late 20th century, the local government began encouraging grape cultivation in the Lancang River Gorge and along the Yangtze River to revive the winemaking industry and promote development in remote areas. In 2014, Shao Ling Winery was born near the Cizhong Church, the birthplace of the missionaries' grape cultivation efforts. The winery signed long-term leasing and cooperation agreements with local farmers, who are responsible for managing the vineyards.
The vineyard covers approximately 3.5 hectares, located at 28 degrees north latitude, benefiting from unique climate conditions with a day-night temperature difference of 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. Grape varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay. During harvest, the grapes are destemmed manually. In the winemaking process, the fruits ferment and age separately according to the plot and variety. The winery uses terracotta pots and stainless steel tanks for fermentation, employs 1/3 wild yeast, gently presses during fermentation, with a maceration period of 2 to 4 weeks. After fermentation, the wine ages for 22 months in new Burgundy oak barrels. Shao Ling Winery's portfolio mainly consists of red and white wines, all of outstanding quality and remarkable performance. Several vintages have received acclaim of 90 points or above from Robert Parker, with the 2019 vintage earning a commendable 94 points. Their white wines also exhibit impressive quality, with the 2021 Shao Ling Hongpo Chardonnay white wine scoring a remarkable 97 points in the 2023 James Suckling Top 100 Wines of China list.
