The 2012 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, which underwent a tardy malolactic fermentation, is surprisingly well behaved on the nose: strict at first and preferring to unfold in piecemeal fashion to reveal saturnine black fruit laced with inkwell and Indian spice scents. The palate is very well balanced: packed full of dense black fruit and struck through with a keen, almost racy acidity. The finish is very solid and structured for Bonnes-Mares that I suspect will age extremely well. In its youth, I suspect this will be impressive more than pleasurable...at least for the first decade of its life.

A beautifully well-layered and ripe nose of cassis, spice, earth and sauvage-tinged aromas are also trimmed in just enough wood to notice. Like all of the best wines in the Jadot 2012 portfolio this is impressively concentrated with plenty of palate soaking dry extract on the muscular broad-shouldered flavors that are shaped by a very firm tannic spine and superb finishing length and power. This is a classic Bonnes Mares that will require a long snooze in a cold cellar before it's fully ready for prime time drinking.
