A little icon wine from South Africa, the Savage Wines 2024 Piekenierskloof Chenin Blanc Not Tonight Josephine shows a delicate orange hue and an intensely aromatic profile of orange marmalade, candied citrus, marzipan and pressed flowers with a lifted, pretty top note. Despite its richness, the wine remains surprisingly elegant, with stirring complexity and a gentle volatile lift. Foot-stomped as whole bunches one week before pressing and aged 14 months in French oak and demijohn, this rare bottling reflects Piekenierskloof’s high-elevation sandstone soils and warm days that encourage this vin de paille style. With 310 grams per liter of residual sugar and an 8.5% alcohol content, production is only 1,600 half bottles.
