Promontory is located in the Napa Valley of the United States and is operated by the Harlan Family, renowned for their cult wines. The estate was founded by H. William Harlan, a member of the Harlan family, who discovered a piece of undeveloped land during a hiking trip in Oakville in the early 1980s. He found the land to be unique, emanating a mysterious power and brimming with untapped potential. In 2008, he acquired ownership of this land, officially establishing Promontory and producing the estate's inaugural vintage.

Spread across approximately 340 hectares of wild land, with only 10% suitable for cultivation, much of the area appears untouched by human interference. Today, the Promontory estate encompasses nearly 400 hectares, with 35 hectares dedicated to vineyards, and is managed by the second-generation family member, H. William Harlan. The vineyards are steeply sloped and predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, along with small portions of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.

One of the unique features of Promontory is its incredible sun exposure, with vineyard plots having a 360-degree orientation to sunlight. Everything is done by hand, creating a sense of isolation that allows for intense focus on the cultivation process.

The winery's design follows an industrial style reminiscent of the Industrial Revolution, featuring over thirty fermenting vessels of various sizes. For aging, they use 820-gallon Austrian oak barrels to allow for a slower maturation process that isn't quickly influenced by the oak. The wines are typically aged for about five years before release. The label design is also carefully curated, with experts involved in the design process, reflecting the attention to detail and quality upheld by Promontory.
