The Karuizawa Distillery, known as Karuizawa, was established in the 1950s and was owned by the Japanese wine merchant Daikoku-Budoshu. Daikoku-Budoshu had vineyards in Nagano Prefecture and decided to expand its business by producing malt whisky primarily for blending purposes. At that time, it was challenging to source malted barley within Japan, so the distillery began importing barley from Scotland, specifically the same variety used by Macallan. The distillery initially used small stills and then transferred the high-quality distillate to sherry casks, following a similar process to Macallan.

Later, Karuizawa merged with Sanraku Shuzo, the owner of the Hakushu Distillery. Karuizawa's single malt whisky, especially its export expressions, outperformed Hakushu, making Karuizawa the flagship distillery of the group. In the 1970s, Karuizawa gained recognition, but Japanese whisky faced a decline in the 1980s. On December 31, 2000, the Karuizawa Distillery suspended operations. However, the following year, a bottle of Karuizawa 12-year-old won a gold medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London, marking the beginning of Japanese whisky's international recognition. Since then, limited editions of old Karuizawa whiskies have been bottled and have appeared in major auctions.
