The global ascent of Japanese whisky owes much to two giants: Suntory and Nikka. In 1923, Shinjiro Torii founded the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan’s first malt whisky distillery. Masataka Taketsuru, the “Father of Japanese Whisky,” established Yoichi in Hokkaido in 1934, later adding Miyagikyo.

Suntory’s style is elegant and refined — rich in fruit, floral notes, and the signature Mizunara oak’s sandalwood and coconut aromas. Nikka offers contrast: Yoichi’s bold, smoky, coal-fired intensity with sea salt, versus Miyagikyo’s delicate fruit and floral grace.

Japanese whisky stands out for its precision, soft water, diverse casks, and unique climate that accelerates aging while adding complexity — resulting in balanced, clean profiles perfect for Highball.

The 1970s–1990s marked the golden takeoff era: domestic boom, massive expansion, and accumulation of superior stock. The 1990s “winter” caused by shochu popularity reduced production, making early and no-age-statement bottles from that period extremely rare today.
