Ata Rangi

Clive Paton, the owner of Ata Rangi winery, began planting Pinot Noir in New Zealand in 1980. Ata Rangi aims to establish the Martinborough region in New Zealand as a globally recognized area for producing exceptional Pinot Noir. Over the years, Ata Rangi has become a superstar in the New Zealand wine industry, and their Pinot Noir has even been served at the Queen of England's palace.

Speaking of the Romanee Conti Clone, an interesting story involves a traveler who visited the Burgundy region in France. This person secretly entered the Conti vineyard, cut a branch, and smuggled it back to New Zealand. Through a fortunate turn of events, the clone eventually found its way into the hands of Ata Rangi's winemaker. Ata Rangi has since magnified its potential. With the influence of the Conti clone, the wine quality soared. Even their "Crimson" label, which is considered a second-tier wine produced as part of their conservation program, is crafted with utmost dedication. In 2008, it was selected as one of the "Top 50 New World Pinots" by Decanter magazine.
