Founded by the powerhouse duo of Matt Thomson (MSc in Biochemistry) and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW (Master of Wine), Blank Canvas is a pinnacle of New Zealand’s "New Wave" boutique wineries. The name reflects their core philosophy: treating every vineyard, variety, and vintage as a "blank canvas," free from the constraints of tradition and dogma.

The winery is defined by a rare synergy of scientific precision and artistic intuition. Leveraging Matt’s 30+ years of global winemaking expertise and Sophie’s world-class sensory rigour, they craft small-batch, single-vineyard wines from Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, and Central Otago. Their approach is one of enlightened minimalism, utilizing wild yeasts, low intervention, and creative techniques—such as co-fermenting Syrah with Grüner Veltliner skins—to produce wines with intellectual depth and profound texture.

In a landmark move for late 2025, the estate acquired its first 9-hectare home vineyard in Marlborough’s Omaka Valley, making 2026 a historic first harvest for their estate-grown fruit. Acclaimed for icons like the 'Abstract' Sauvignon Blanc and 'Element' Syrah, Blank Canvas consistently earns 95-97 point ratings from critics like James Suckling and Bob Campbell MW. They represent the future of New Zealand wine: authentic, site-specific, and uncompromisingly sophisticated.
