Bowmore

Bowmore, established in 1779, is one of the oldest distilleries on the Isle of Islay. It is known for its commitment to traditional whisky production methods. Originally, the distillery used the time-consuming "floor malting" technique, a practice that is now employed by only a handful of distilleries. Bowmore also distinguishes itself by drying malted barley using locally peat-smoked with seawater-soaked peat, showcasing the unique terroir of the region. The water used in the whisky production is filtered through layers of highland rock and peat underground, adding complexity to the final product.One notable feature of Bowmore is its renowned No. 1 Vaults, which is often seen on the bottle label. It is one of the oldest whisky maturation warehouses in all of Scotland and is unique as it is located below sea level. It experiences less "angel's share" (evaporation of whisky during maturation) compared to other warehouses but is exposed to the sea breeze from the west. This combination gives Bowmore whiskies a distinct character, often described as having an addictive soap bubble aroma.
