Chateauneuf du Pape is located between Orange and Avignon in the southern part of France and has a history dating back hundreds of years. Its name is derived from its close connection to the Pope, as in 1309, Pope Clement V moved from Rome to Avignon and built his own castle there. The adjacent vineyards eventually became the predecessor to the famous Chateauneuf du Pape. The estate gained further legendary status in the 1920s when Baron Le Roy, owner of Château Fortia, established the first wine appellation system, which later became the Appellation d'Origine Controllee (AOC) system. In 1929, Chateauneuf du Pape became the first AOC region in France, solidifying its reputation and attracting many winemakers to the area.

The main grape varieties used in Chateauneuf du Pape are Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, commonly known as the GSM blend with Grenache as the dominant grape. However, the region allows for the use of 22 different red and white grape varieties, and the soil diversity, consisting of rounded pebbles and sand, is composed of ancient riverbeds made of quartz and remnants of the Alps glaciers. These rocks act as a protective layer, preventing the soil from drying out during the hot summer months, and irrigation or watering is prohibited during the growing season.

You may have noticed the unique embossed design on Chateauneuf du Pape bottles. This was initially created to help consumers easily differentiate between wines from different regions and to prevent lower quality imitations from affecting the region's reputation. The design incorporates the triple crown of the Pope and the keys of Saint Peter, symbolizing the Pope's contribution and status in the region. The triple crown represents the highest legislative, judicial, and executive powers, hence the three crowns in the design. The keys of Saint Peter represent the two keys given to Saint Peter by Christ, one made of gold and the other of silver, with the gold key used to open the gates of heaven and the silver key used to open the gates of the earthly world. However, not all wineries use this design as it is only allowed for use by members of the Union of Chateauneuf du Pape winemakers, and others must pay a fee to use it. Come and explore the rich history and terroir of Chateauneuf du Pape.
