Clos des Papes winery was established in the 18th century and began producing and trading wine under that name in 1896. In the 20th century, it gained recognition and favor from two French presidents, General de Gaulle and Georges Pompidou, who designated it for their private use. Clos des Papes has been honored by Robert Parker, who included it in his list of the world's 155 greatest wineries. The winery's reputation is held in high regard by wine enthusiasts, often compared to the prestigious Bordeaux First Growths. In Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines ranking, Clos des Papes 2005 secured the first position.
