Cragganmore

Cragganmore distillery was established by John Smith, whose father, George Smith, was the founder of Glenlivet. John Smith was a burly man weighing 360 pounds, and the name of the distillery, Cragganmore, translates to "Big Rock" in Scottish Gaelic. The name of the distillery is closely related to the name of the water source they use, "Craggan."

Under his father's guidance, John Smith gained experience as a manager at Macallan distillery at a young age of 20. In 1869, he chose Ballindalloch as the location for Cragganmore distillery due to its proximity to the Highland railway, making it the first distillery to transport whisky by rail and ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality water. Despite his imposing stature, John Smith meticulously designed the stills, resulting in a delicate and smooth spirit. Cragganmore whiskies have been praised by the late whisky expert Michael Jackson as having the most complex aromas among Speyside whiskies.
