Escarpment was founded in 1998 by Larry McKenna, who graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree before venturing to New Zealand. He made significant contributions to Pinot Noir production at Martinborough, New Zealand, earning him the nickname "Mr. Pinot Noir of New Zealand." Under his leadership, the winery has received numerous awards, graced the cover of Decanter magazine, and been recognized as the top among New Zealand's 20 best wines. Escarpment has also been ranked seventh on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines list, receiving high ratings from esteemed wine critics such as Robert Parker and James Suckling.
Escarpment employs natural yeast fermentation and refrains from filtering or fining their wines. They produce multiple series, including the esteemed "Single Vineyard" range, known for its elevated quality and depth of flavor.
