The Glenturret Distillery, located in the Scottish Highlands, derives its name from Gaelic meaning "the dry valley of the Turret." With its origins tracing back to 1763, it proudly holds the distinction of being Scotland's oldest operating distillery. Situated near the pristine waters of the River Turret, the distillery was historically known by other names including "Hosh."
Like many whisky producers, The Glenturret has weathered numerous challenges throughout its long history - economic hardships, wars, the Great Depression, and the American Prohibition - all of which led to periods of suspended operations. In 1957, under new ownership, the distillery resumed production, successfully preserving its precious traditions. Later acquired by the Edrington Group, it established a visitor center that continues to attract numerous whisky enthusiasts each year. In 2018, the distillery was purchased by French wine merchant Art & Terroir and is now managed by Silvio Denz, owner of the renowned Lalique crystal company.
A key factor in The Glenturret's enduring legacy is its steadfast commitment to traditional craftsmanship. The distillery still employs hand-operated mash tuns and wooden washbacks, operating just one pair of stills. While its annual production capacity reaches 340,000 liters, actual output is carefully maintained at around 170,000 liters - prioritizing quality over quantity. This philosophy is further enhanced under the guidance of former Macallan master distiller Bob Dalgarno.
At the heart of the distillery stands a bronze statue honoring Towser, the legendary distillery cat. During her remarkable 24-year residence, Towser caught an astounding 28,899 mice, earning her a place in the Guinness World Records as Scotland's most prolific mouser - a charming testament to The Glenturret's rich heritage.
