Henri Gouges is a symbolic representation of the historical significance of Burgundy wines. As early as 1933, the owner of the estate, Henri Gouges, became dissatisfied with the restrictions imposed by wine merchants and the prevalence of counterfeit wines. In that year, he made the decision to initiate a transformation in Burgundy and became the first producer to independently vinify and bottle their wines for direct sale, establishing a historic winery.
Subsequently, other Burgundian winegrowers followed the same practice. Henri Gouges was also a visionary proprietor who, during the economic downturn of the 20th century, acquired a significant number of exceptional vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges. He became one of the region's representatives. The estate is currently managed by the fourth generation, Gregory and Christian. The unique winemaking philosophy of the new generation focuses on presenting the original flavors of the grapes and expressing the terroir of each vineyard plot. Each wine is aged in a similar proportion of new oak barrels, approximately 15-25%. Since 1990, the wines have not undergone fining or filtration, allowing them to develop complex and elegant characteristics while maintaining firm tannic structure for long-term aging.
The current owner, Gregory, has also expressed the introduction of new winemaking techniques that will enhance the allure of the wines produced by the estate. These techniques aim to showcase charming flavors at a young age while also allowing for long-term cellaring. By combining past glory with present innovation, the future of the estate is worth paying special attention to.
