JL Vergnon

JL Vergnon is situated in the Champagne region of Cote des Blancs, known for its prime Chardonnay-growing areas. After being taken over by the fifth-generation descendant, Jean Louis, in 1985, the estate transformed into an RM grower Champagne house. Following family setbacks, former Pol Roger winemaker Christophe Constant assumed control in 2002, setting the winery on the path to producing boutique Champagnes. Despite the change in winemaker, the estate boasts exceptional vineyard parcels, with 5 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards including Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize, and 7 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards.

In terms of winemaking philosophy, Christophe Constant believes in minimal intervention, opting not to use dosage to balance acidity and refraining from Malolactic Fermentation. He trusts that the natural sugar content is sufficient, with late harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness, allowing for ample phenolic development. This approach results in wines that exhibit astonishing depth and complexity. With fermentation yielding an alcohol content of 11%, it is evident that grape ripeness is meticulously managed. The wines also undergo at least three years of aging on lees, showcasing the dedication to craftsmanship and quality at JL Vergnon.
