Oban

Oban is a lonely distillery on the western coast of the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1793 in the town of the same name by prominent local merchants John and Hugh Stevenson, Oban is one of Diageo's smallest distilleries. Oban whiskey is known for its salty flavor due to its seaside location, and is also known for its peaty notes common to the islands it sees. The distillery is equipped with a 7-ton traditional rake and mash tank, four larch recoil tanks and a set of stills. Worm barrels and tubes are used to cool and condense the spirit after distillation. Combined with long fermentation times averaging 110 hours, this gives the brewery an annual production capacity of just 870,000 liters. Oban's core range includes the 14 Year Old, Little Bay and Distillers Edition, none of which have released age statements. The 14-year-old has a strong tendency to mix sweetness and smoke. There are hints of peat and salt on the nose, along with a basket of fruit. The taste is sweeter, with oak and a touch of smoke, and a long aftertaste. In 2018, a 21-year-old refill European Oak butt also appeared in the special edition range.
