【Super Sale・Bordeaux 2009 & 2010 Super Deuxièmes】

Bordeaux is a region that places great emphasis on vintage. Among the factors determining the quality of a vintage, weather is the most critical. Winemaking, especially grape cultivation, is an industry highly dependent on favorable weather conditions. Wines produced in a great vintage are often considered of divine, exceptionally high quality, as they benefit from ideal climatic conditions: abundant sunlight, sufficient rainfall, and favorable day-night temperature variations. These elements allow the grapes to mature steadily through a stable growth cycle, reaching their optimal state. Wines from such vintages exhibit outstanding aromatic complexity, richer tannins, and exceptional aging potential. Over time, bottle aging reveals even more diverse aromas and layers of complexity, showcasing the wine’s most robust and distinctive character.

The year 2009 was universally recognized as one of the best vintages. However, to everyone's surprise, 2010 was once again blessed by the goddess of fortune. Since the turn of the millennium, 2010 marked the fourth truly great vintage for Bordeaux. But why is the 2010 vintage considered "legendary"? And what makes a great vintage exceptional? According to a saying in Bordeaux, “Quantity depends on June, style depends on August, and quality depends on September.” In Bordeaux, dry or even drought-like conditions are often the hallmark of outstanding vintages. The 2010 vintage was no exception – it was drier than usual, with exceptionally favorable weather throughout the year. The summer climate was similar to 2005: warm and very dry. From July to September, rainfall was even lower than in 2009, 2005, and 2003. The period from August to October was cooler and drier than 2009, creating ideal conditions. With this combination of perfect timing and favorable geography, the grapes developed thick skins, high alcohol levels, and balanced acidity. In the hands of skilled winemakers, the resulting wines were concentrated, full-bodied, and bursting with intense fruit flavors.

From a grape varietal perspective, Cabernet Sauvignon from 2010 achieved outstanding quality. Across Bordeaux, all regions performed exceptionally well and consistently in 2010. Wines from this vintage are characterized by higher alcohol levels, fresh acidity, low pH, and abundant tannins. These wines are powerful, rich, and dense, yet remarkably fresh and pure, hinting at extraordinary aging potential. Particularly, wines dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon will, over time, develop unparalleled elegance and sophistication, revealing a timeless and refined brilliance through aging.
