Walter Hansel

Walter Hansel is currently managed by Jesse Torres, Steve Hansel, and Stacie Burgin. There are no full-time employees at the winery, so from harvesting to bottling, Jesse, the winery manager, brings in familiar workers to work together and create world-class wine.

Originally a farmer's family, they have been growing different types of fruits, from kiwis to pears. In the 1970s, they suddenly started trying to grow Chardonnay grapes. The family also produced two barrels of wine themselves, but found it very difficult to drink. They realized that winemaking was not that simple and later found a friend, Tom Rochioli, who ignited their passion for winemaking and learned winemaking techniques. This passion slowly brought attention to the winery from around the world. Currently, they have 80 acres of vineyards, mainly growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. There are 5 Pinot Noir and 5 Chardonnay clones planted in the vineyard, and all fruits are hand-picked. The key is low yield to achieve higher complexity. Since all their grapes are grown on their own land, they have strict control over the vineyard. Each clone is chosen for its specific acidity and flavor changes.
