I have previously championed the work of Luca Attanasio and am pleased to so the same with the 2016 Primitivo di Manduria Librante. This is a seriously powerful and full-bodied red wine that embraces all the exaggerated exuberance you get in a high-octane Pugliese wine. The alcohol here is 16.5%, and there is no refuge from that power. However, that taste of residual sugar softens the blow. Candied cherry, blackberry preserves and jam color the bouquet of this dark and thickly concentrated wine. You would not be mistaken to think there was some level of fortification here. Rest assured, it's just that Puglia sunshine shining through. This is a very particular and unusual wine because of its strength, so please be forewarned. Fruit comes from old alberello or head-pruned vines. This wine ages in oak for 12 months. Some 10,000 bottles were made.
