Bass Phillip was founded in 1979, and the winery's name is derived from "George Bass" and "Arthur Phillip." George Bass was an explorer, while Arthur Phillip was a naval officer. To honor both individuals, the winemaker, Phillip Jones, established the winery in South Gippsland, Australia, a small corner of the country. Bass Phillip follows the most traditional winemaking methods and insists on low-yield grape cultivation of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They do not irrigate the vines and minimize human intervention. The cool climate, natural high humidity, and mineral-rich soil of the region provide ideal conditions for the grapes to develop excellent flavors, complexity, aromas, balanced acidity, and mineral notes. In 2002, Bass Phillip adopted biodynamic practices, showcasing their love for the grapes and the environment. As a perfectionist, Phillip Jones prioritizes quality above all else. Each wine from Bass Phillip exhibits a rich mouthfeel, delicate texture, captivating fruit aromas, and mineral notes, showcasing exceptional complexity. This has solidified the winery's impeccable reputation, earning them the title of the "Master of Australian Pinot Noir" by wine industry professionals. Janice Robinson even asked after tasting their wines, "Is this the Southern Hemisphere DRC?"
