The Sadie Family is located in the Swartland Mountain Areas of South Africa and was created by Eben Sadie. He gained experience in winemaking in Germany, Australia, Oregon, California, Spain, France, and South Africa before ultimately settling in South Africa. He was drawn to the diverse soils of South Africa and follows a non-irrigation approach in vineyard management, using mostly manual harvesting and limiting the use of small oak barrels. His winemaking philosophy is to extract flavors in the same way as brewing tea, emphasizing the importance of timing. He believes that in order to showcase terroir, winemaking should be simplified and the focus should be on the work done in the vineyard. Eben Sadie is now one of the most respected winemakers in South Africa and has received numerous awards, including being named "Winemaker of the Year" by Platter's Wine Guide in 2010 and 2015 and receiving the "Winemaker Award" from the Master of Wine organization in 2017. His free-spirited personality led him to initially only produce two wines, a red and a white, in order to have time for his favorite activity, surfing. These two wines, the Palladius and Columella, have become the signature wines of the estate and showcase the unique terroir of the Swartland region of South Africa. In collaboration with viticulturist Rosa Kruger, Eben Sadie has also created a range of wines made from old, abandoned vineyards, highlighting the potential of the area. With an annual production of only 3,800 cases, these wines are highly sought after. The Sadie Family has made a significant contribution to raising the standards of South African wines to international levels, with complex structures and rich flavors, comparable to Domaine Jean-Louis Chave in France.
