Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis distillery was established in 1825 by Long John Macdonald, making it one of the earliest distilleries to obtain a whisky license after the implementation of the new whisky tax laws in Scotland. The distillery is located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK (1,334 meters). Ben Nevis whiskies are known for their rich and full-bodied character, with notes of nuts and chocolate. The water used in production comes from rainfall and snow at the mountain's summit, filtering through peat and granite layers, ensuring purity and a distinct local flavor.

Ben Nevis has experienced periods of closure and changes in ownership over the years. In 1989, it was acquired by Nikka, the Japanese whisky pioneer founded by Masataka Taketsuru. The distillery was reactivated in 1990 under Nikka's ownership. Ben Nevis has limited stocks of 10-year and 15-year whiskies, leading to a prevalence of independent bottlings (IB) in the market, while official bottlings (OB) directly from the distillery are quite rare. It is worth noting that the age statement on Ben Nevis whiskies tends to be older than stated on the label, with 10-year expressions often containing whisky aged around 12 to 15 years.
