RAEN was established in 2013 by Carlo and Dante Mondavi, the fourth-generation descendants of the Mondavi family. Inspired by their father Tim and their grandfather's creation of the legendary winery "Continuum," the two brothers were driven by passion to establish RAEN, which stands for "Research Agriculture Enology Naturally." The winery's name embodies many of its core principles. They employ winemaking techniques used by Burgundian monks centuries ago, believing in coexisting with and listening to nature's needs to create wines that best express the perfect terroir. The name also holds another meaning as it pays homage to their father Tim, who taught them the inseparable relationship between "rain" and grape cultivation, ultimately naming the winery after this concept.

With the spirit of "quality over quantity," RAEN produces wines primarily focused on Pinot Noir, along with a small amount of Chardonnay. They use whole-cluster fermentation, which is not an easy accomplishment, as it relies on soil pH compatibility. Currently, only five wineries in California have achieved this. For aging, French Burgundian oak barrels are used, with 10% being new barrels to avoid overpowering the wine with excessive oak influence. The wine's cork is imprinted with "R.G.M Heart & Soul," representing the heart and soul of Robert Gerald Mondavi, in gratitude for his contributions over the years. RAEN has now become one of the leading producers of Pinot Noir in California.
