Owner Branmante Abbruzzese inherited the family estate located in Montalcino, with a history of over a hundred years, and established the Valdicava winery in 1953. Previously, the estate used to sell grapes to the renowned Biondi-Santi winery. In 1977, the winery started bottling and selling under its own brand, Valdicava. When it passed down to the third generation, Vincenzo Abbruzzese took over and elevated the Valdicava winery to international fame, making it one of the heavyweight wineries in Montalcino.

Brunello di Montalcino wines are divided between traditional and modern styles, and Valdicava chooses to follow a middle path. They use both large oak barrels and 225-liter French oak barrels for aging, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. This approach results in mature, elegant, full-bodied wines with robust tannins, abundant fruit flavors, and a continuous flow of elegant and wonderful fruit aromas. The skillful use of oak barrels helps maintain a balance with the fruit flavors.

Valdicava wines have consistently received high ratings of 95 points or above from professional wine critics such as RP, AG, and WS. Particularly, their flagship wine, Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Madonna del Piano Riserva, achieved a perfect score of 100 points from Wine Spectator, a rare honor as it was only the second 100-point score given to an Italian wine by WS at that time. Additionally, the 2006 and 2010 vintages were awarded perfect 100-point scores by James Suckling, making a total of three perfect scores, a nearly unprecedented achievement in Italian wines. It's no wonder some consider Valdicava to be among the top three wineries in Brunello di Montalcino.
