Weingut H.J. Kreuzberg is located in the Ahr Valley of Germany, which is a highly renowned region for growing Pinot Noir grapes. In German, Pinot Noir is typically referred to as "Spätburgunder." Therefore, all three wines in this case come from Pinot Noir grapes sourced from the Ahr region. The Kreuzberg Estate has been cultivating grapes for over a century, with its first official vintage dating back to 1950. In 1990, the Ahr Valley experienced a breakthrough, and German Pinot Noir started gaining recognition and appreciation from other countries.
One of the wines, "Devonschiefer," is a special cuvée crafted by the estate. This Pinot Noir represents the slate soil style, and the grapes are sourced from the top vineyards. The style leans towards being light, fresh, and highly drinkable. Silberberg, which translates to "silver mine" in German, is located in a small valley surrounded by forests, resulting in a cooler climate. This wine is aged in French oak barrels for 20 months and exhibits fresh red fruit aromas, juicy and concentrated fruit flavors, fine acidity, hints of pepper, and floral notes, with a long finish.
The final wine, Sonnenberg, comes from the warmest site in the region, with its name meaning "sun mountain" in German. The vineyard faces south, and like the previous wine, it is aged in French oak barrels for 20 months. Sonnenberg offers ripe, fresh red fruit flavors, delicate herbal notes, a delicious and juicy mid-palate, a rich texture overall, and firmer tannins. It can be aged for some time to enhance its complexity and depth.
