The 2016 Black Beauty from Kanaan is composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and has a deep garnet appearance. The nose is attractively open, with some developing notes of leather, mushroom and even a touch of earthiness, still with a core of ripe mellowing dark fruit (cassis, mulberry, black cherry and black plum). The secondary toasted oak is also melding nicely together with the tertiary development complemented by some barrel-matured notes of dark chocolate and coffee. On the palate, the 2016 Black Beauty is full-bodied with very coating angular and grainy tannins, some lively acidity and well-integrated 15% alcohol providing the platform for the dark concentrated, if mellowing, fruit and complex savory notes. With its long length, the 2016 Black Beauty is already drinking well but will repay cellaring over the next 3-5 years and possibly beyond. It will be interesting to see whether the already impressive 2019 Black Beauty follows a similar path.
