Hospices de Beaune

During the Hundred Years' War and the Black Death, the people of Beaune in Burgundy, France, experienced extreme poverty. In response, Nicolas Rolin, the Chancellor of Burgundy, and his third wife, Guigone de Salins, founded the Hospices de Beaune in 1443 to provide medical services to the poor. In 1457, Guillemette Levernier donated the first vineyard to the hospital, establishing a tradition of vineyard donations. Over the course of 500 years, the hospital has acquired approximately 60 hectares of vineyards, with 85% classified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. The grape harvest takes place in early September each year, and the "Hospital Wine" is auctioned on the third Sunday of November, with the auction unit being the 228-liter barrel, equivalent to 288 bottles. This annual event, known as the "Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction," has been held since 1859 and has raised funds that are entirely donated to the hospital and its charitable works.
