Yuandian reports that it spent some 10 years experimenting with natural wine production prior to the 2019 vintage in which the winery made sufficient volume of natural wine to justify bottling (only 2,475 bottles of this Cabernet Franc were produced). Having said that, it’s notable that Yuandian released its 2018 Amphora Riesling previously. The 2019 The Starting Point Cabernet Franc has a deep purple appearance. On the nose, there is some slightly volatile "funky" dark fruit—no sulfur dioxide here—with some leafy Cabernet Franc character showing mulberry, bramble and sage with just a touch of savory oak (only 25% of the wine saw 500-liter new oak for a mere five months). On the palate, this is full-bodied with somewhat warming 15.5% alcohol, fine-grained chewy tannins and some lifting acidity. But the slightly warming alcohol is partially offset by a core of ripe Cabernet Franc fruit defined by bramble, mulberry and even some black cherry, wrapped up in some sage-like herbaceous character and a little savoriness. If you like black-fruited expressions of Cabernet Franc—like those produced in Hungary’s Villány—with a degree of funky "wildness," then this is the wine for you. With its moderate length, the 2019 Cabernet Franc is already approachable and will also improve in bottle over the next two to three years.
