It’s been interesting reviewing XiaoLing’s whites for this year’s report, and in particular, noting the differences between the fruit character of the Chardonnay Grand Vin, which sources its material from Jiang Po village at some 2,800 meters above sea level, and also three different vintages (2019–2021) of the Hong Po Chardonnay. The Hong Po wines certainly seem to show a fleshier profile, albeit still with some of the lively acidity you’d expect from fruit sourced at 2,600 meters above sea level. The 2019 Hong Po Chardonnay has a deep lemon appearance and a developing nose of ripe lemon and lemon peel, nectarine, peach and red apple with some slightly toasted notes and tertiary hazelnut and a touch of honey. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with lively acidity and relatively well-integrated 14.1% alcohol, combining some ripe Chardonnay fruit with those sweet and savory slight tertiary notes, the palate also being enriched by some creamy lees. With its moderate to longer length, this is perhaps showing better than the 2020, but it just falls short of the compelling 2021 vintage of this wine. While this is already developed, it will see some slight further improvement in bottle and will certainly hold well over the next year or so.
